A Proven Advocate for Family-friendly School Policies
Why I am Running for the School Board Again
I am seeking a seat on the next Loudoun County School Board because public education in the county has reached a critical point in its development, and I believe that I have the new ideas, experience and leadership needed at this time. I welcome the opportunity to make a contribution toward meeting the most urgent challenge facing Loudoun County today, which is defining and then providing the appropriate level of government services for one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, while both meeting the aspirations of its citizens and avoiding overburdening households with excessive taxes, especially during a time of economic weakness and uncertainty.
A key element in achieving the two sometimes competing goals of lower taxes and high quality public services is expansion of Loudoun’s commercial tax base. In that regard, I firmly believe that the next School Board must be an active, equal partner with the next Board of Supervisors in meeting this objective. And, elected School Board members in their role as the governing body for public education in Loudoun County must strike an equitable balance among three sometimes overlapping constituencies: 1) students and their families (education consumers), 2) school system employees (education providers), and 3) taxpayers (those who fund education).
To achieve this equitable balance, School Board members must be skillful in working with other elected and non-elected community leaders and citizens. In that regard, I believe that my experience, already demonstrated dedication to public service, grounding in family-oriented principles, open-mindedness, and willingness to fairly evaluate all sides of an issue in order to achieve consensus among differing viewpoints well qualify me for service on the next Loudoun School Board, for which I ask for your vote on November 8.
